Influential Famous TV Dads

Can you remember the dads you watched on tv when you were a kid? Danny Tanner from Full House, Howard Cunningham from Happy Days, Mike Brady from The Brady Bunch, Phil Dunphy from Modern Family? These television dads are iconic. They shaped our idea of what a dad is like, and maybe even made us wish we could have one of them as a dad for a day!

Dad from Happy Days Howard Cunningham is an absolute staple in American culture! Often referred to by Fonzie as “Mr. C,” he is a beloved tv dad across generations. Howard is an understanding father, allowing his kids to be happy but also teaching them important lessons. The jokes at his expense are often about his weight And his ability to laugh at himself and let his children learn how to be happy is something we can all identify with when we think of Dad.

Dad from Brady Bunch “Until one day when the lady met this fellow, and they knew that it was much more than a hunch! That this group would somehow form a family, and that’s the way we became the Brady Bunch!” We all remember sitting in front of our tv (some of them even with a dial to change the station!), eager to sing along to the theme song from The Brady Bunch. This show truly brings the concept of ‘blended family’ to life! Both parents came together with children of their own to form their own family. After Marcia, Marcia, Marcia submitted an essay - Mike was voted Father of the Year. Mike also has that sense of integrity. Remember that time he refused to be in a commercial because he didn’t believe in it? Mike also let the children get into a fair bit of mischief, telling the children to “listen to their mother.” He is the stoic and hard working father - reminding us of our fathers who worked so diligently to provide for our families.

Dad from Full House Danny Tanner led quite the blended family, with three daughters, DJ, Stephanie, and Michelle. Their mother is absent, and Danny must rely on his best friends Uncle Jesse and Uncle Joey for support. All three, Danny, Jesse, and Joey, act as fathers to the girls. The family is quirky, hilarious, and incredibly loving. You can see Danny trying to juggle being both father and mother - teaching his girls lessons about self-image and relationships. You can remember your dad doing the same for you, and it’s a familiar feeling of childhood and home.

Dad from Modern Family Phil Dunphy! What a character! Phil is always striving to be the cool, hip dad. He has three teenage children whom he co-parents with his wife. Phil is always giving the best advice - so much so that he creates his own book - “Phil’sosophy” full of incredible life advice such as: “If you love something, set it free. Unless it’s a tiger;” “When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. Life will be like…. Whaaaat?” Phil’s family is certainly modern. His wife’s brother, Mitchell, is married to Cameron. Cam and Mitchell adopt Lily, a baby girl from Vietnam. Phil’s father in law, Jay, who is married to Gloria, and Gloria has a son, Manny. The family tree is complex but the love amongst Phil, Claire, Mitchell, Cam, Lily, Jay, Gloria, and Manny is real. Phil is the type of dad who tries his best to diffuse any situation, using humor as a way to calm down the masses. Dad’s have a way of doing that, don’t they? “Dad jokes,” right?

Don’t forget, there is a little bit of all of these tv dads in your own family! Show him some appreciation this Father’s Day and purchase the gift of relaxation from our men’s line. To see our new men’s line, go to , because even dad’s deserve a “time out” too sometimes!
