Mother's Day and Its Legacy
Mother’s Day is the history of honoring strong women, particularly the mothers of generations and generations. It is founded solely on appreciating all that mothers do, and in honor of all mothers living or deceased. The concept goes back to ancient Greek mythology and up to more recent founders who perpetuated the holiday for what it is today. Mom Bomb pays tribute to the Mother’s Day legacy, as our namesake depicts, Mom is the Bomb!
“Mothering Sunday” was a celebration in England that was introduced in the 16th century. It was a Sunday dedicated for everyone to visit their mother. The eldest of the kids in the family would bring a “mothering cake” to share with the family. The whole family would attend church services and a special dinner would be prepared in honor of the mother of the household.
Julia Ward Howe
Julia Ward Howe was an American poet and author who was also an influential women's rights activist. In 1872 she suggested that June 2nd of each year be set aside to honor mothers. Unfortunately, this idea did not take effect until 1907, when Miss Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia, took up the banner.
Anna M. Jarvis
What inspired Anna to start campaigning for a national holiday to honor all mothers was the untimely death of her mother. She wanted to commemorate her mother’s life. Her mother was known as “Mother Jarvis a lifelong activist who organized “Mothers Work Days” to save the lives of those dying from polluted water. Mother Jarvis also made women's brigades, to help the war efforts regardless of what side their husbands were serving on in the Civil War.
May 10th, 1908, in Grafton West Virginia, a mother's day service was held at the church where Mother Jarvis had taught. This determined that the second Sunday in May should honor mothers. Anna M. Jarvis brought the idea to Washington DC, and the first state to legitimize the holiday was West Virginia and the rest eventually followed.
